IFHE is a membership-based International NGO registered as an association under German law.
The Delegates Assembly (Council) meets every two years to decide on IFHE matters of importance and elect President and Treasurer for their overlapping, four-year terms. The Executive Committee is responsible for implementing the Federation’s goals. The IFHE General Secretariat is based in Bonn, Germany.
The Federation traces its beginnings to an international congress on Home Economics Education held Switzerland in 1908. The congress aimed at attracting attention to the value of domestic work done by women and the importance of their education. As the teaching of Home Economics was still in its infancy in many countries, the congress also offered an important opportunity to exchange to Home Economists.
Despite the difficulties of travel and communication, the event attracted 750 participants from 20 countries. Based on a feeling of shared purpose, the decision was made to form an international body for Home Economics. An International Office of Home Economics was established in Fribourg, Switzerland.

Following the tradition of the first Congress in 1908, IFHE World Congresses are held every four years and attract 1,000 participants from around the globe. These events offer an exiting opportunity to discuss current research questions, best practices and emerging trend in Home Economics, Family & Consumer Science, Human Ecology and related fields.
World Congresses have been held in all continents, successfully organised by IFHE members from the host country on a voluntary basis (click heer for World Congress venues & themes since 1908).
