Household Technology and Sustainability
Call for Interest - New Programme Committee in IFHE
Household Technology and Sustainability
We observe following facts:
- The use of various technological devices is increasing in households all around the world
- The devices consume resources by providing support for daily living
- These devices may be more efficient as doing the same job by hand
- Research is needed to identify best practises for doing household jobs by using various devices for help and support
- Research is needed to qualify and quantify environmental effects coming from the use of technical devices in households
- Research is needed to identify sustainable technological solutions for daily household work
- Training is needed for the correct use of devices in households
- Globalisation of appliance industry must be balanced by a globalisation of the requirements on domestic appliances.

Obituary Note for IFHE President of Honour Margaret DALLOWAY O.B.E, UK
Born as Margaret Dane in Natwich, England in 1922 the world knew her as PADDY.
After gaining a distinction in teacher training at Gloucester College of Domestic Science she taught in Birmingham and Dorset and in 1951 became the Domestic Science Organiser for the County of Warwick. From 1954 she worked as an Inspector of Schools for the City and County of Bristol until her retirement. Throughout her professional career she was involved with many prestigious organizations including as honorary Secretary and Vice president of the United Kingdom Home Economics Federation and President of the National Association of Inspectors and Educational Advisors. In 1980 she was awarded an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) for services to education.
However, it is for her unique contribution to the IFHE that she will be remembered around the globe. During her presidency her guidance through constitutional and financial change ensured that the IFHE maintained its worldwide status and importance. Her natural administrative and managerial skills together with her deep social conscience were respected by all who knew and worked with her. She had a great ability to recognize and nurture the talents of others, whatever their capability, but also sought commitment in return. By nature Paddy was very sociable and enjoyed entertaining friends from all continents. She had a great sense of fun, which could surface in the direst of situations. She shared a happy marriage with her late husband Dan who often traveled the world with her. For the last fourteen years she had struggled, with great determination and bravery against her increasing effect of Parkinson`s disease.
Let us remember Paddy for her great service to Home economics and each endeavour to perpetuate her vitality to extend the work of the IFHE throughout all nations.

Obituary Note for Odette FROGER, France
Odette FROGER died in March 2007. She was one of the most longest serving member of the IFHE French Section.
She was the best French member who spoke the English language; she had numerous friends among IFHE members, and this friendship lasted throughout her life by letter and greetings every New Year.
Since her childhood in her family was her mainstay. Throughout her life she was a volunteer for a number of social activities. After the war, she trained as a teacher of Home Economics in Paris. In 1953, she was awarded a grant to study for one year at an American University. This was the beginning of her international open activities. Shortly after her return from the USA, through the Fullbright Association she was responsible for American young girls spending a sabbatical year in Paris.
She joined IFHE and became the representative of the Paris Home Economics Teachers Association. For the Paris IFHE Congress in 1963, she was very active in the welcoming among the 1000 participants. She attended many IFHE Congresses and Councils and was a member of the Executive Council Member from1984 to 1988. She attended the Programme Committee Meetings for many years, always making new friends and entertaining them at her home.
She was married in 1956; and had two daughters who gave her six grand children. She was for them a wonderful mother and grandmother.
At her funeral her daughters said: “we are numerous here thinking how we have been privileged to live near such an exceptional person who has given us the love for life, the strength to accomplish many things who taught us tolerance, and faithfulness: her open-mindedness will deeply miss all of us, will never be forgotten- and help us to over come our sorrow“.

Former IFHE Treasurer Rosa JOHNER - An Obituary Note
On behalf of the International Federation for Home Economics we are deeply saddened to inform you that Rosa JOHNER has passed away in her home country of Switzerland on May 28, 2006 in the age of 79.
Rosa JOHNER was elected Treasurer of the IFHE in 1988 at the World Congress in Minneapolis, U.S.A. She has faithfully been present at all the Council Meetings every two years as well as at the World Congresses every four years. She contributed to the organisation the Congress in Hannover in 1990, flew to Council meetings in Melbourne, Australia in 1992 and to Sheffield, England in 1994. Thanks to her ability to express herself in a number of languages, Rosa's collaboration to our association has been most enriching. Rosa JOHNER's discharge from the IFHE, was celebrated at the 18th. World Congress in Bangkok, Thailand.
Rosa JOHNER was thanked most sincerely for her outstanding contribution. Managing the finances of the International Federation for Home Economics during eight years was not evident, particularly during these last few years, where the absence of funds had been badly felt and the need to economise has become even greater. How many times has she travelled to Paris at her own expense to clarify questions pertaining to the budget at IFHE Headquarters.
The honourable discharge of her term of office as IFHE Treasurer General in Bangkok marked the end showed the degree to which both her sociable personality and her work had been appreciated.
On behalf of the Swiss Home Economists and IFHE we express our sincerest condolences to her family.
