Norway

The Educational System of Norway:

  1. Primary and lower secondary education (compulsory school), 6 to 16 year-olds, total 10 years.
  2. Upper secondary education (general education and vocational training), 16 to 19 years-olds, total of 3 years.
  3. Higher education at universities and colleges.
  4. Higher education is divided into 3 sectors: university, university college and regionally dispersed state college. To gain access to higher education, an applicant has to have general study competence. The normal qualification is the final upper secondary examination issued upon completion of a total of 13 years education below higher education level. Foreign applicants should normally fulfil the requirements which admit them to university studies in their home country.


University and State Colleges:

  1. Bachelor: A 3 year degree course is offered at universities and state colleges.
  2. Master: A Master´s degree is awarded after a further 2 years course os study.
  3. Grading system: Grades, for undergraduate education, are awared according to an international standards on a scale with A as the best. A "pass"/"fail"mark is given for some examinations. University and College programs are measured in ECTS points. The normal work load for one semester is 30 ECTS points.
