UNFCCC - UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
Copenhagen, 7 - 18 December 2009
The Convention and the Protocol
Over a decade ago, most countries joined an international treaty - the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - to begin to consider what can be done to reduce global warming and to cope with whatever temperature increases are inevitable. More recently, a number of nations approved an addition to the treaty: the Kyoto Protocol, which has more powerful (and legally binding) measures. The UNFCCC secretariat supports all institutions involved in the climate change process, particularly the COP, the subsidiary bodies and their Bureau.

More Than 116 Million People - Nearly 2 Per Cent of the World's Population - Stand Up against Poverty
World Record for Mass Mobilization Shattered
Citizens Demand that World Leaders Keep Promises to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals and End Inequality
Vienna, 23 October (UN Information Service) - Anti-poverty campaigners today announced that more than 116 million people - nearly two percent of the world population - mobilized at events in 131 countries on 17-19 October as part of "Stand Up and Take Action." The mobilization, which was ratified by Guinness as breaking the world record for the biggest mass mobilization on a single issue, sends a clear message to world leaders that citizens will not stay seated while promises to end poverty remain unfulfilled. At least 5 million additional people - many in Africa and Latin America - Stood Up at events not submitted before the Guinness deadline.

Global Handwashing Day (GHD) - October 15th 2008
Unite for the 1 billion Children who are without access to sanitation
On October 15th, 2008 the first ever Global Handwashing Day (GHD) will be celebrated around the world. This is an initiative of the Global Public Private Partnership on Handwashing (PPPHW) as a contribution to the International Year of Sanitation. However it is intended to go beyond 2008 and will be celebrated in coming years also.
UNICEF is a member of the PPPHW along with many other Public (WSP, WSSCC, WHO, USAID, CARE, etc), Private (P&G, UNILEVER, etc) and Academic (LSHTM, JHU, AED, CDC, etc) partners who's main aim is to increase HandWashing With Soap (HWWS) worldwide, building on the knowledge and experiences of all partners.
The main focus of this years event are school children and we hope to see - how many children we can get to wash their hands on October 15th. Knowing that the lead up time to this in 2008 is very short we hope that you can organise some type of event even if its just at one school to contribute to the day (and hopefully the establishment of a record) and lay the foundations for events in the years to come.
Various members of the PPPHW have offered to play a role in certain countries in taking the lead for convening the initial planning meeting for GHD, and may be in contact with you. We would like to encourage you all to get involved in Global Handwashing Day and work with these partners to make the day a success. We have stressed at Global level that the partners should not try to duplicate work and/or partnerships which are already in existence at country level but should build on their work and strengthen Handwashing initiatives already on-going. We are not limiting events to the 20 identified countries but encourage everyone to get involved to the extent possible.
